Ghanaian author Yaa Gyasi will be honoured at the 2016 National Book Critics Circle Award.

She will receive The John Leonard Prize for her book, Homegoing, which is about the family tree of two half-sisters born in 18th century Ghana, one sold into slavery and the other married off to a British soldier at the Cape Coast Castle.

The book attracted a seven-figure advance and has been described as “hypnotic” and “brilliant”, and its 26-year-old author as “stirringly gifted.”

Gyasi was born in Ghana, and raised in the southern US state of Alabama. She got hooked on writing after she submitting her first story to a young author’s competition and receiving a letter of achievement for her effort.

The announcement was made on Tuesday by the organization, founded in 1974 and made up of 1,000 literary critics and book review editors.

The National Book Critics Circle Awards are a set of annual American literary awards by the National Book Critics Circle to promote the finest books and reviews published in English.

The event will be held on Thursday, March 16, 2017 at the New School’s Tishman Auditorium, New York, United States of America.
